Greek life at Catholic colleges can be hit or miss. Some Catholic colleges may have active Greek life, and some may not.
Catholic colleges that have active Greek life may have chapters of national and local fraternities and sororities. Some Catholic colleges may also offer their own versions of Greek life that are built around Catholic values and practices, such as service. Greek life in either case offers students a community and opportunities for leadership, mentorship, social activities, and even job opportunities. Greek life that is more centered around the Catholic faith specifically can also offer opportunity for spiritual mentorship and development through fellowship with other members.
Other Catholic colleges may not have Greek life, but could offer alternatives to Greek life that offer similar experiences and opportunities. Some alternatives may be student clubs centered around leadership and service. These clubs can offer students the chance to be mentored and take on leadership positions, or engage with the community and find avenues for service. Campus ministries or faith-based clubs can also offer students fellowship and a community that encourages and takes part in spiritual growth and development together. Some colleges may even offer residential or living-learning communities, which operate very similarly to Greek life. Living-learning communities typically are themed and focus on specific interests like service, leadership, or a specific academic discipline. These are just some examples of possible alternatives to Greek life that a Catholic college may offer, not a conclusive list.
No two Catholic colleges are the same. Some may offer Greek life and some may not, but could have suitable alternatives in place. If Greek life is something you desire, be sure to check with the website and admissions department of the college(s) you are interested in to find out what options are offered.
