The alumni networks at Catholic colleges are quite similar to those of non-Catholic colleges. There may be some differences in the area of mission and values, but the primary roles and benefits that come from an alumni network are similar.
Alumni networks offer networking opportunities, financial gifts, mentorships, career opportunities, and community. Alumni networks can give students the chance to connect with an alumni working in the career field they desire and find mentorship, advice, and even job opportunities. It is not uncommon for alumni to hire students from their alma mater. It can also be a great way to find an internship or begin to build connections in the industry. Alumni networks are also a great place to find community, as a current student or an alumnus. Being able to connect with others who have a similar experience (college) and can relate to students while they figure out the transition from college to career can be such an encouragement.
Alumni have also been known to provide some financial gifts or donations to their former school, for scholarships or improvements, to make the educational experience for the next generation more affordable or possible. Colleges often rely on these philanthropic donations for ongoing development or improvements to the campus, and even for financial aid and scholarships for students.
In most areas, alumni networks from Catholic colleges are very similar to the alumni networks of non-Catholic colleges. The biggest difference between the two may be the shared mission and values of alumni from Catholic colleges. Typically, alumni from Catholic colleges share the values from Catholic colleges, relating specifically to values that come directly from the Catholic faith, such as service and social justice. This can create tighter, more like-minded alumni networks who, in some cases, are more likely to stay involved with events and mission/ministry opportunities put on by the school.
Because of these shared values, mentorships may also look a little different between alumni and students. There can be an aspect of spiritual guidance and encouragement, which are especially helpful coming from someone who shares the same faith and some similar experiences and struggles as the student. It can also help the student see where service and faith intersect with their career goals and how it can be seen in life after college.
For the most part, though, the alumni networks at Catholic colleges and non-Catholic colleges are mostly the same. Not every alumni network is created equal or will have the same level of connection and commitment from alumni. For more information about what role the alumni network plays at a Catholic college, inquire with the career services, alumni services, or admissions department of the college(s) you are interested in attending.
